Burton Malkiel

Burton Gordon Malkiel (born August 28, 1932 ) is an American economist and writer who is known for his popularization of the random walk theory in his book A Random Walk Down Wall Street . In addition, Malkiel is an Emeritus of the Chemical Bank Chairman's Professorship in Economics at Princeton University .

education

In 1949, Malkiel graduated from Boston Latin School before earning his bachelor's degree in 1953 and his MBA from Harvard University in 1955 . After that, he initially worked in business, but continued to be interested in academia and finally received his doctorate in 1964 from Princeton University .

Professional background

After his Ph.D. Malkiel took a position at Yale University , but later moved to Princeton University, where he was eventually transferred to the Chemical Bank Chairman's Professorship in Economics. During his career at Princeton University, Malkiel served twice as chairman of the faculty of economics, as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers (1975-1977), as president of the American Finance Association (1978), and as dean of the Yale School of Management (1981 -1988). Malkiel was also a director of the Vanguard Group for 28 years and currently serves as CIO of software-based financial advisory firm Wealthfront Inc. and advisor to Robert D. Arnott's investment management firm, Research Affiliates. In 2001 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .

Personal

Burton Malkiel married his first wife, Judith Atherton Malkiel, in 1954 and had a son, Jonathan with her. After Judith Malkiel's death in 1987, Malkiel married his second wife, Nancy Weiss, who was Dean of the College of Princeton University from 1987 to 2011. From 1955 to 1958, Malkiel served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army .
