Burt's Bees is an American cosmetics company based in Durham , North Carolina . The company produces exclusively natural cosmetics , mainly based on beeswax , milk and sugar .
history
The origin of Burt's Bees was formed by the beekeeper and later namesake Burt Shavitz (1934 / 35-2015) from Dover-Foxcroft , Piscataquis County , in the state of Maine . In 1984, Burt Shavitz and Roxanne Quimby started making candles from its beeswax.
Shavitz and Quimby registered Burt's Bees as an Incorporation in the commercial register in 1991 . At that time, in addition to candles, they also sold soap, perfume, and lip balm made from beeswax.
The expansion made a new location necessary. In 1993, Quimby finally acquired the shares in Shavitz and relocated to North Carolina. Creedmoor , Granville County , became the new headquarters and production site in 1994 . In the same year the first retail store opened in nearby Chapel Hill . With the development of new markets, a larger location became necessary. So in 1999 Burt's Bees moved to its current location in Durham .
After the investment company AEA Investors had already acquired an 80 percent stake in 2004, the US household goods company Clorox finally bought the company for 925 million US dollars in December 2007 . Since then, Burt's Bees has been its subsidiary and brand . In 2018 Clorox had sales of 6.1 billion US dollars. Burt's Bees brand accounts for 4% of that, or roughly $ 244 million.
