Burttia prunoides is a plant from the family of connaraceae and the only representative of its genus.

description

Burttia prunoides are shrubs or small trees . The actually compound leaves only have one leaflet . The inflorescence is one to three-flowered, the heterodistyled flowers are hermaphroditic and usually five, rarely four.

The petals are hairless, as are the stamens and the stylus . There is only one carpel . The fruit is a sessile follicle that is thickly felty on the outside and bare on the inside. It opens after maturity.

The seeds are individually attached to the inside of the bellows and have a fleshy outer layer, the so-called sarcotesta , which only covers the seeds on one side. The endosperm is plentiful, the radicle is pointed.

The species is native to East Africa.

Systematics

Species and genus were identified in 1931 by Baker f. & Exell first described. They are placed in the tribe Connareae of the family.
