Butlers ( spelling : BUTLERS ) is a German trading company that sells home accessories, decorative items and gifts in around 122 branches in Germany and abroad. The Cologne-based company also operates an online shop with the “ Made for your home ” concept and the presentation of decoration ideas using theme tables . Butlers central warehouse is in Neuss .
history
Butlers emerged from the Wilhelm Josten Söhne family business founded in Neuss in 1829 , to which the Josten department store for kitchen and household goods belonged. In 1999 the brothers Wilhelm and Paul Josten opened the first Butlers branch with Frank Holzapfel in Cologne . In 2005 Butlers went to other European countries with the subsidiaries "Butlers Trading Ltd." and "Butlers Handel GmbH". The first branches were opened in London , Zurich and Vienna . While the branches in Germany , Austria and Switzerland are operated independently , franchise licenses have been issued for Luxembourg , Malta , Hungary , Ukraine , Greece and the Czech Republic .
In cooperation with the Berlin start-up company Stickvogel, Butlers introduced the customization service Made by you in 2011 , where customers can use an online configurator to individually embroider and engrave items or have pictures printed on canvas.
In 2004 Butlers was awarded the German Retail Prize in Berlin . In 2005 and 2012 the auditing company Ernst & Young named the company a finalist in the “ Entrepreneur of the Year ” competition. In addition, Butlers received the German Online Retail Award 2012 in the "Living" category for its online shop and the 2013 Neocom Consignor of the Year award .
On January 27, 2017, Butlers filed for bankruptcy at the Cologne District Court . Right from the start, the aim was to reorganize the company using a planning process. Almost 30 branches were closed in Germany alone. In September 2017, the company announced the successful completion of the bankruptcy proceedings. 800 jobs and a total of 82 branches of the chain in Germany, Austria and Switzerland were thus saved. In May 2018, the number of branches rose again to 89.
