history

History before World War II

The origins of the Leverkusen City Library can be found in the so-called “Volksbücherei”, which was housed in the school building on Hauptstrasse in what was then the Wiesdorf community in 1910 . Since the communities Bürrig and Wiesdorf had united on 1 April 1920, the name Wiesdorf and on February 12, 1921 Wiesdorf town charter was awarded, the merger of were in the course of municipalities merged the libraries in the early 1920s. In 1925, a “city library” was first mentioned in Leverkusen . At that time, the city library was still being looked after on a voluntary basis by teacher Anton Lütter, who, however, was only allowed to select the media; the library committee had to decide on their actual acquisition. Small branches still existed in the suburbs of Küppersteg and Manfort at that time . In 1926 the city library saw "[...] one of the best means of combating filth and trash in literature." The city library was thoroughly cleared of Marxist and anti- religious books in 1933 and the district administration provided 42 volumes with a value of 126 Reichsmarks available free of charge to expand the stock of books to include values of National Socialist ideas. In 1939 an advertisement from the Rheinische Landeszeitung documents the city library, which has since been renamed the Volksbücherei again: "The Volksbücherei is a source of strength for all creative people, strengthens the strength and effectiveness of the inner front during the war."

Post World War II story

In 1946 the city library had 16,000 volumes and lending operations were resumed on April 1, 1946. After a few moves, the city library moved into its new home in the Doktorsburg in Wiesdorf on July 29, 1957 . The city library was converted into an open access library based on the American model in October 1965 and also got its own youth library. After massive space problems, the city library was relocated to the former Sparkassenhalle in 1972, which was structurally integrated into the town hall. In the 1970s, the library also reached its peak with around 620,000 loans (1975). Since the library urgently needed expansion in its new building, the new wing was opened in November 1998, and on July 1, 2002, the second construction phase was the redesign of the rooms in the old building next to the town house. In 2010 the city library was spatially integrated into the newly built " Rathaus-Galerie " shopping center .

Branches today

Due to the deteriorating financial situation in the city over the years, only three branches remain today. The Schlebusch branch has been a combined school and district library since August 2008, which is professionally managed by a librarian . The librarian is supported by volunteers from the school association of the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium. The Opladen branch has also been operated as a combined school and district library since mid-January 2009.

The branch in Hitdorf has been looked after on a voluntary basis since 1994 and closed in 2015.

The branch in Steinbüchel has been run since 1998 mainly by volunteers from the Friends of the Steinbüchel Library and supported by an employee of the city library.
