The Butterfly Knoll (English for butterfly hill ) is a 900 m high nunatak in the East Antarctic Coatsland . In the group of La Grange Nunatakkers of the Shackleton Range, it rises 7 km southwest of Mount Beney .
Aerial photographs were taken in 1967 by the United States Navy . The British Antarctic Survey carried out surveys between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the Nunatak so in 1972 because it resembles a butterfly in its oversight .
