At 1000 m, Mount Beney is the highest of the La Grange Nunatakker in the northern part of the Shackleton Range in the East Antarctic Coatsland .
It was roughly mapped in 1957 as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958). The United States Navy took aerial photographs in 1967 . The British Antarctic Survey carried out surveys between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the Nunatak after Sergeant Ivor Christopher Beney (1932–1979) of the Royal Engineers , a member of the Royal Society's team in the International Geophysical Year at Shackleton Station in support of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
