The Càrn Gorm is a 1029 meter high mountain in Scotland . Its Gaelic name means Blue Hill or Blue Mountain . The mountain is located in a group of four Munros , which are in the form of a horseshoe open to the south, north of the small settlement Invervar in Glen Lyon . The mountain group is also known as the Càrn Mairg Group after the highest peak or, due to the shape of the mountain, as the Glen Lyon Horseshoe .

With the exception of the Càrn Mairg , which has a rocky summit structure made of quartzite , the other three Munros of the mountain group as well as the various pre- peaks classified as tops have comparatively inconspicuous flat summit plateaus consisting of grass and heather. Only the Càrn Gorm stands out from the Glen Lyon with its conspicuous round and grassy summit. Four mountain ridges converge at the summit. The longest is the eight kilometer ridge running northwest to Loch Rannoch . To the northeast, there is the transition to the neighboring Meall Garbh , interrupted by the 924 meter high rocky pre-summit of An Sgòrr . The south ridge of the Càrn Gorm is the steepest and shortest ridge interspersed with rocky sections and is usually avoided as an ascent route. The southeast ridge is less steep and therefore the preferred route for mountain hikers. The 19 square kilometer Càrn Gorm and Meall Garbh Site of Special Scientific Interest , which has subalpine vegetation, has been located on the southeast side of the Càrn Gorm and Meall Garbh since 1955 .

The Càrn Gorm is climbed by many Munro excavators as part of a crossing of all four Munros of the entire mountain group, an approximately 18 km long tour. The Càrn Gorm is the first Munro when walking clockwise. Due to its location, it offers a very good view of Glen Lyon and the mountains to the south of the Ben Lawers .
