Cäcuber
The Cäcuber (Latin Caecubum , ancient Greek Kaikoubos ) was an extremely high quality antique red wine that was grown on the "Caecubus ager", a swampy plain in Lazio on the coastal lake of Fundi (Latin Lacus Fundanus ) not far from the city of Tarracina and throughout the Roman Empire was consumed. The vines of the Cäcubers thrived on the loose volcanic tuff soils of this Latin cultivation area. The Roman poets Horace (in the Odes ) and later Martial praised this wine in the highest tones. Nero had a canal built in the cultivation area of the Cäcuber in order to be able to transport the Dido treasure believed to be nearby . The swampy wine-growing area was drained and finally completely destroyed. The Cäcuber initially disappeared completely from the offer. The name was probably retained as a general designation for a fine wine. In Martial's time, a noble Cäcuber was then imitated, produced and delivered to wine connoisseurs in the wine presses of the Greek city of Amyklae .
