Caesar Beck ( December 9, 1850 in Munich , Kingdom of Bavaria - August 22, 1925 in Munich, German Empire ) was a German theater director as well as theater and silent film actor .

Life

Caesar Beck was the son of a tailor. He attended St. Ludwig's parish school with remarkable success. Heinrich Richter (1820–1898), actor at the Munich Court Theater, saw him in a student performance and advised him to pursue a stage career. Beck took part in the Franco-German War in 1871 as a volunteer. He then began his career at the Hoftheater in Munich and went via Augsburg to Frankfurt am Main, Hanover and Wiesbaden. Later he worked at the Imperial German Theater in Petersburg until its dissolution in 1890. Then he went to Breslau, Bremen, for a few years at the 'Berliner Theater' and the Residenztheater in Hanover. Beck was also successful in London. The press wrote about his role in Ibsen's Nora or Ein Puppenheim : "Mr. Caesar Beck was an ideal Helmer, the best I have ever seen." His subjects were: lovers, heroic roles and, at an older age, heroic fathers. He was married to Anna Beck-Radecke (1861–1918). In 1897 they separated. Beck was senior director at the Munich court theater for many years and died in his native city at the age of 74.
