Cecile La Grenade

Dame Cécile Ellen Fleurette La Grenade , GCMG , OBE (born December 30, 1952 in La Borie ) is a nutritionist and politician from Grenada , who became the first woman to be Governor General of Grenada in 2013 .

Life

Cécile La Grenade is the daughter of teacher Allan La Grenade and the nurse Sibyl Sylvester-La Grenade and a granddaughter of Mary Louise "Eva" Ollivierre-Sylvester, who became the first woman in 1952 to become a member of the Legislative Council of the Windward Islands . She grew up in St. Paul's and completed her education at the St. Louis Girls Roman Catholic School and at St. Joseph's Convent in Saint George . She then began studying chemistry at the University of the West Indies (UWI), which she completed with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Chemistry). She completed postgraduate studies in nutritional sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) with a Master of Science (MSc Food Science) and a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. Food Science ). She then worked as a nutritionist with the American US Agency for Food and Drug Administration ( Food and Drug Administration ) worked before, after the death of their mother in 1992 Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to 2013, the line founded by her family La Grenade Industries , a company that processes nutmegs in particular . She was also Chair of the Public Service Commission between November 2007 and November 2010 and was recognized for her services as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

On April 9, 2013, Cécile La Grenade became the first woman to be appointed Governor General of Grenada . As the successor to Carlyle Glean , she officially took up this position on May 7, 2013. On May 14, 2013, she was ennobled as Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG), so that she has had the addition of "Lady" since then. On October 18, 2014, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of the West Indies.
