Macrosialin (synonym CD68 ) is a surface protein from the group of LAMP proteins and a cell adhesion molecule .

properties

CD68 immunostaining of macrophages and giant cells in xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis

Macrosialin is produced by monocytes and macrophages (and their tissue-specific resident counterparts, histiocytes , giant cells , Kupffer cells and osteoclasts ) and is a cell type marker . It is also produced by lymphocytes , fibroblasts and endothelial cells . In addition, it is also formed by various tumors to form cell contacts . Macrosialin is glycosylated .

Macrosialin binds to oxidized LDL , phosphatidylserine and to apoptotic cells.

Applications

CD68 immunostaining is used in the diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis , histiocytic sarcoma, and Gaucher's disease .
