CHIP is a single board computer of the brand "NextThingCo". In May 2015, the CHIP was successfully financed with more than 2 million dollars on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter . A Linux operating system runs on the CHIP . It was specially created for children, embedded systems and hackers; and with it, Internet of Things projects should be realized. This is possible through WIFI and Bluetooth. The microprocessor , an Allwinner Tech R8 , clocks at 1 GHz; 512 MB of RAM are available on the circuit board (outside the processor) and 4 GB of storage space is available on the processor chip of the R8. The processor comes from the ARM Cortex-A8 processor family. The computer can also be connected to an HDMI or VGA monitor using an adapter . The development and the construction plans for the hardware and the software are freely available and open source .

The starting market price of the single board computer was nine US dollars. There is now a revised model on the market that is considerably more expensive than the initial model (as of December 2016).

At the beginning of 2018, the manufacturer of the formerly 9-dollar computer made headlines with delivery problems, a "strange product strategy" and suspicions of being insolvent.

A virtual game console for the PocketCHIP is called Pico-8 .
