CMS is an international law firm that provides legal and tax advice. She advises companies on commercial law issues. CMS includes 17 independent law firms with more than 70 locations worldwide.

history

In 1999 six European law firms with 1,400 lawyers and a turnover of around 500 million marks merged to form CMS. A “partnership of partnerships” was created under the CMS brand, which initially also aroused criticism. The law firms involved kept their ancestral names. A joint service company was founded to provide administration and IT services for members.

Initially, CMS included law firms from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and the United Kingdom. In the course of the 2000s, further law firms from France, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland and Spain as well as other countries were added. In 2008 the law firm opened its first joint office in Russia. The merger of Cameron McKenna with Nabarro and Olswang enlarged the merger again in 2016. For the first time, total sales of CMS reached around one billion euros. There are now also CMS offices in Latin America and Africa.

CMS recently pursued a stronger integration of the law firms involved.

legal form

CMS coordinates the activities of members using the CMS Legal Services EEIG / EWIV . This initially took care of administrative tasks and over time received additional tasks, for example in marketing. CMS Legal Services does not work for clients itself. They are financed from sales contributions from the law firms involved, which remain legally independent.

The General Assembly acts as the highest body of CMS . It meets once a year and decides on budgets and the admission of new members. In addition, there is a board of directors that deals with strategic issues as well as the appointment and control of the management. Each participating law firm can send representatives to the committee.

The day-to-day business of CMS is in the hands of a three-person management team . It consists of Pierre-Sébastien Thill (Chairman), Duncan Weston and Matthias Lichtblau.

Locations

The members of CMS currently include 17 law firms with headquarters in eleven European, four South American and two African countries. In addition to their activities in their home countries, the law firms involved are active in other countries through branches , subsidiaries and associated law firms as well as offices and representative offices.
