Collagen type XV, alpha 1 is a collagen that the gene COL15A1 is encoded. It forms homotrimers , which in turn form type XV collagen fibrils .

properties

The trimerization domain of collagen type XV, alpha 1 consists of three monomers , each of which consists of four β-sheets and an α-helix . This domain of the class of multiplexins (COL15A1 and COL18A1 ) represents a three-dimensional fold, which has a high sequence variability and thus enables a structural integrity, which is necessary for a dense and efficient trimerization.

COL15A1 is able to connect the basement membrane with the loose connective tissue . It stabilizes microvessels and muscle cells in the heart and skeletal muscle . It can also inhibit angiogenesis .

It can bind to fibronectin , laminin and vitronectin , and also to the collagen / gelatin-binding domain of fibronectin. COL15A1 inhibits the adhesion and cell migration of fibrosarcoma cells when they are in the fibronectin-containing matrices.
