CP Puppis (also Nova Puppis 1942 ) was one of the brightest and fastest novae of the 20th century. The first spectrograms of the Nova were recorded on November 11, 1942, at the Mount Wilson Observatory . Within three days of discovery, it rose from less than 17.0 m to the maximum V = −0.2 m . The time it took to decrease by 3.0 m (t3) was, at just 6.5 days, one of the shortest ever recorded for a nova.
The high flux in the X-ray range and its strong modulation with a very short orbital period of only 1.47 hours for novae can best be explained by a magnetic white dwarf with a high mass M> 1.1 M ☉ and a low accretion rate <1.6 × 10 Explain –10 M ☉ per year. The system is thus a cataclysmic variable (CV) and possibly belongs to the class of the DQ Herculis stars .
