Facade of the Ca 'del Duca towards the Grand Canal

Ca 'del Duca is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Sestiere San Marco , overlooking the Grand Canal between Palazzo Falier and Palazzo Malipiero . The entrance to the ground floor is from the Corte del Duca , also called Corte del Duca Sforza .

history

Marco Cornaro , Caterina Cornaro's father , entrusted the project for the Bartolomeo Bon building : the plan was to build a building large enough to accommodate the largest reception room in the city. The unfinished palace was sold to Francesco I Sforza in 1461 , who entrusted Antonio Averulino with the grandiose renovation . Before the project could be carried out, however, the palace was expropriated because of the rivalry between the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan . Jacopo Sansovino was commissioned by the Procurator of San Marco, Vittore Grimani , with a second restructuring project. But this time too, the project could not be implemented.

In the 1520s, the Titian building served as a studio; he made many paintings there to decorate the Doge's Palace . In 1618 Alfonso de la Cueva-Benavides y Mendoza-Carillo , a Spanish nobleman who appeared as envoy in Venice, settled there. He had to flee because he was involved in the Bedimar conspiracy (1617–1618) to damage the Republic of Venice.

In 2011 the Luxembourg pavilion was housed there at the 54th Venice Biennale .

description

The palace is remarkable because it has three facades: one faces the Grand Canal, one faces the Rio del Duca, and one faces the Corte del Duca .

The main facade of the palace, which was built in the 19th century, appears visibly incomplete in its expressive simplicity. Some elements that have remained from the old construction are two mighty truncated columns, part of the ground floor in basement , the portals to the water and the windows on the ground floor. All of these elements adorn the side facade facing the Rio del Duca . The facade facing the courtyard is impressive because of its size, but does not show any valuable structural elements.
