Caddiu

Caddiu is a red wine that is grown in the Italian region of Sardinia . It is generally not made from a single variety , but used as a blending partner with the grape varieties Bovale Grande , Nieddera and Monica Nera . Although their cultivation is recommended in the provinces of Cagliari and Oristano , the area under vines in the 1990s was only 6 hectares . In the lower part of the Tirso river valley , this mixture is used to make Solanas wine .

Smaller plantings are also known in Argentina and France .

The grape variety was first described by the ampelographer Bruno Bruni.

Synonyms

The grape variety Caddiu is also known under the names Caddeo, Caddiu nieddu, Caddu, Niedda, Nieddda perda serra, Perda and Serra.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is only hairy with white wool and the tips are colored carmine red. The wavy young leaves are only hairy cobwebs.
  • The large, almost pentagonal leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are large compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The conical to cylindrical grape is small to medium-sized and moderately dense. The round berries are medium-sized and purple-black in color. The berry skin is thick.

The grape variety ripens approx. 30 - 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late in international comparison.

The yields of the variety fluctuate widely and explain the low importance.
