List of grape varieties

Monica Nera is an autochthonous red wine variety from the island of Sardinia . It is believed that it is of Spanish origin and that the Californian grape variety Mission is related or even identical to it. In Sardinia it was first grown in the area around Alghero . Later it was probably spread by monks (hence the name, which is derived from monaca = monks ) all over the island. Its cultivation is now recommended all over the island. In 2016, around 1,203 hectares of planted vineyards were collected. Smaller plantings are also known in France . A variety can also be found in Tunisia.

The moderately vigorous, late-ripening variety delivers consistently high yields. The dark colored wine is of decent quality and blends ensure a round and full taste. The wines are included in the DOC wines Mandrolisai , Cagliari and Monica di Sardegna .
