Café A Brasileira (Coimbra)

The Café A Brasileira is a café and restaurant in the Portuguese university town of Coimbra . It is located on Rua Ferreira Borges , a traditional shopping street in the pedestrian zone of the historic old town, in the municipality of São Bartolomeu .

The pharmacist Adriano Soares Teles do Vale , who comes from Alvarenga in northern Portugal and works in Porto , grandfather of the filmmaker Luís Galvão Teles , had already emigrated to Brazil as a young man, where he had become rich as a trader and coffee producer at the end of the 19th century. When his wife fell ill, he returned with her to Porto in 1903, where she died a little later. Here he turned to creating points of sale for his Brazilian coffee, which he called Casa Brasileira or A Brasileira .

Teles opened its first sales outlet in Porto in 1903. Lisbon followed in 1905 (one in the Chiado district and one on Rossio), and he gradually opened further branches in Braga, Aveiro, and Seville, Spain. The Coimbra café opened its doors in 1928.

The Café A Brasileira in Coimbra became a meeting place for many intellectuals in the old university town, especially in the 1960s.

In 1995 the café closed and a clothing store moved into the premises. After extensive renovation work from 2010 and total investments of several million euros, the entrepreneur Lúcio Borges, who already runs a café in Coimbra, then reopened the café on March 1st, 2012. The crockery bears the café's emblem and one wall has a quote from Zeca Afonso , who was a customer as a student. The old motto “O melhor café é o da Brazileira” (“The best coffee is that from A Brazileira”) can also be read on one wall. The opening ceremony took place with the participation of Mayor Joao Paulo Barbosa de Melo and attracted the attention of the national press. Since then, the café and restaurant u. a. Confectionery and baked goods from our own production.
