Passing the bar, a few steps lead to the wood-paneled dining room. Column and ceiling design, Thonet chairs on marble tables, wall and ceiling lamps and coat racks convey the style of Art Deco. Café Grundmann is one of the few coffee houses in the German-speaking area that has been completely preserved in the Art Deco style. A séparée and a bar complete the space.

Cultural events also take place in Café Grundmann. The café is a regular venue for the Hot Club d'Allemagne , a band that keeps the legacy of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli alive. During the Leipzig book fairs , the Grundmann is a reading place of the Leipzig reading festival . Numerous regular tables gather here.

history

Café Grundmann was founded in 1919 by master confectioner Wenzel as Café Wenzel . Its location roughly corresponded to the site of the former Brandvorwerk estate , which was known for its popular excursion restaurants in the 18th and into the second half of the 19th century. The following innkeepers, each named after them, all pastry chefs, were Sitz (1926–1930), Lutze (1931–1958), Schröer (1959–1978), Günther (1978–1992) and Grundmann (since 2000).

The veranda, which was added in 1927, goes back to A. Sitz. In 1930 the Art Deco facility, which is still preserved today, was built.

During the GDR era , the café was popular for its jazz evenings . Chanson events were in high demand due to the appearance of critical songwriters.

After 1992 the café stood empty and the house was in danger of decay. After the renovation from 1998 to 2000, Eckehard Grundmann took over the café.
