The Café Mayer , also coffee Mayer is an old traditional coffee house in Bratislava in Slovakia . It is located on the corner of Hlavné námestie Square and Sedlárska ulica (German Sattlerstrasse ). It was founded by the kuk court confectioner Julius Mayer in 1873 .

history

It is one of the most famous coffee houses for both locals and tourists. Similar to the Viennese coffee houses , the café still has old furnishings that go back to the time it was founded. In addition to the coffee house, there is also a pastry shop where Slovak and Viennese pastries are made. The Greek embassy is in the same building. The coffee house did not exist during the communist era. It was only reopened in 1993.

Trivia

Before the First World War , the café was frequently visited by Archduchess Isabella von Croÿ-Dülmen and her numerous daughters. Isabella was an Archduchess of Austria and the wife of Archduke Friedrich, who resided in the Grassalkovich Palace in Pressburg at the end of the 19th century . When Isabella stopped here, the establishment was unceremoniously closed to the public by the owners.

After the Velvet Revolution, attempts were made to restore the café to its original state and it was reopened in 1993. A large painting of Empress Elisabeth was hung in one of the rooms and was intended to commemorate the Habsburg Empire . In showcases that were set up on the walls, memorabilia are exhibited to remind of the history of the house.
