Café Prinzess is located on Rathausplatz, directly opposite the Old Town Hall , where the Perpetual Reichstag met from 1663 to 1803 . Princes, bishops and their embassies from the entire Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation came and went here every day . This gave the café an exposed location.

history

The coffee came early 17th century Venetian merchants over to Europe from there mainly to Italy. Coffee became known at the court of Louis XIV through an envoy of Muhammad IV . From France it finally came to Germany through merchants in 1670, where the Café Prinzess was opened in 1686, just three years after the first coffee house in Vienna . Coffee houses in other cities soon followed, for example in 1687 in Hamburg , 1697 in Würzburg , 1712 in Stuttgart and not until 1721 in Berlin .

The café today

The café has been in the same location since 1686, but the building was renovated in 1953 and 1985. On the ground floor there is now a confectionary with in-house pralines, cakes, tarts and pastries. The café, which is divided into two areas, is on the first floor. One area contains a tiled stove and a bar, the other, furnished in Art Nouveau style , has a classic stove, marble tables and Thonet chairs . The Salon de thè, also known as the tea room, is located on the 2nd floor of the house, with its sweeping Chippendale armchairs.
