In the Schwarzenberg café

The Café Schwarzenberg is a coffee house on the Ringstrasse in the 1st District of Vienna Inner City . It is located at Kärntner Ring 17 opposite Schwarzenbergplatz . In contrast to many other well-known Viennese coffee houses, artists and writers were not part of the regular clientele. A special feature is the original furnishings from the end of the 19th century.

history

Around 1902. Side inscription: “J. Human s Café Schwarzenberg "

In the course of the construction of the Ringstrasse 1861–63 the Viennese architect Wilhelm Westmann (1813–1881) and the master builder Paul Wasserburger (1824–1903) for the silk goods manufacturer August Zeppezauer († August 17, 1870 in Hadersdorf ; age: 55), company Anton Fries & Zeppezauer , built the house as a rental palace.

Raimund Hochleitner, who opened a coffee house on June 6, 1861 at Riemergasse  2, Vienna-Innere Stadt , and who on December 29, 1863 with the sole proprietorship R. Hochleitner at the kk Handelsgericht Wien as a coffee maker (until March 31, 1862 general goods dealer) was registered, the coffee house opened as Café Hochleitner after 1863 . In April 1867, Hochleitner was granted permission by the Vienna City Council to set up tables in a part of the area in front of his company . After the death of Raimund Hochleitner († June 19, 1878, age: 55), his wife Johanna († 1916, age: 86) ran the business until 1882 (according to Lehmann's General Housing Gazette ). In 1883 Josef Sperrer took over the business and ran it under the name of Café Sperrer until 1901, from the takeover by Josef Menschl in 1902 the coffee house was called Café Schwarzenberg , and from 1939 until the end of the war it operated as Café Deutschland .

The café has always been a meeting point for personalities from business. One of the most famous regulars was the architect Josef Hoffmann , a co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte . Many of his designs were created during his visits to coffeehouses.

During the occupation after 1945, the Red Army used the premises for events. The establishment of the business was damaged by shootings, the traces of which could be seen until 1979, the year in which the privately run business was about to collapse and the city of Vienna decided to take over the house and run the city's own Wigast restaurant operator. Ges.mbH to run. The café was renovated in February 1980, combined with renovations (seating garden, business section) and subsequently reopened as an old Viennese concert café.

The Schwarzenberg café was operated by Österreichische Verkehrsbüro AG until January 1st, 2008 and has been owned by the Vivatis Group since then, following the sale of Verkehrsbüro Kulinarik GmbH. Like most of the Ringstrasse cafés, it has a terrace facing the Ringstrasse.

The Schwarzenberg café is frequented by both Viennese and tourists. In addition to cultural events such as readings, exhibitions and concert evenings, there is evening coffee house music several days a week. During the Viennese ball season , Café Schwarzenberg is one of the few cafés to offer an early morning hangover breakfast, where the ball audience can strengthen themselves with a small goulash and a Seidl beer for the beginning of the day after attending the ball (usually around four in the morning) .
