Caia Augusta Juliette Greene (also: Caia Aarup; Caia Aarup Greene; born August 27, 1868 in Copenhagen ; † December 3, 1928 in Copenhagen; born Aarup) was a Danish pianist and composer. She played a major role in spreading anthroposophy in New York and thus also in the USA .

Life

Caia Aarup's parents were the bookseller Jens Jonas Peter Christian Vilhelm Aarup (January 30, 1839– March 2, 1910) and his wife Ulla Christence Elisabeth Aarup, b. Wildenrath (* March 8, 1845, † after August 27, 1868). On May 20, 1898, she married Herbert Wilber Greene, co-founder, owner, and director of the Metropolitan College of Music in New York. She was his second wife.

Caia Aarup received her first lessons from her mother, then from Angelika Badszt. She studied for two years in Paris and later with Franz Neruda . After completing her training, she first traveled through Scandinavia as a concert pianist . Then she went to New York. On June 4, 1889, she played the Scherzo No. 3 in C sharp minor op. 39 by Frédéric Chopin at the 3rd concert of the Metropolitan Conservatory of Music in the Chickering Hall in New York . From at least 1890 she was a faculty member at The Metropolitan Conservatory of Music , which was renamed the Metropolitan College of Music in 1891 . In 1893 the college awarded a scholarship named after Caia Aarup, the Caia Aarup Pianoforte Scholarship . During this time she composed and published various songs. On May 20, 1902, she married Herbert Wilbur Green, who had meanwhile become director of the Metropolitan College of Music. Caia Aarup Greene led piano lessons at the Associate School of Music. At the Musical Guild Academy , she and her husband were examiners for quarterly exams. Together with him she established the Summer School of Music in Brookfield Center (Connecticut) . In New York she gave concerts as a song accompanist. So she accompanied z. B. on January 15, 1903 the soprano May Stimson at the Walldorf Astoria in New York City. From October 1907 she opened a piano school in Carnegie Hall .

In the winter of 1910, Caia Aarup Greene and her husband joined an anthroposophical group that was later called the St. Mark Group . In 1913 Caia took over the leadership of the St. Mark Group in New York. Together with her husband, she played a major role in spreading anthroposophy in New York. Among other things, she was responsible for ensuring that the fundamental works of Rudolf Steiner were included in the New York Public Library .

After her husband's death in 1925, a few months before her death, she visited her mother Ulla again in Copenhagen, where she died on December 3, 1928.
