Cajon (unit)

The cajon was a mass unit for ore in the South American countries Argentina , Bolivia , Chile and Peru .

The general basis for a quintal ( Spanish for: hundredweight) was the Spanish Libra with four arrobas . One arroba was equivalent to 11.506 kilograms .

  • Argentina and Bolivia
    • 1 cajon = 50 quintales ~ 2301 kilograms
  • Chile
    • 1 cajon = 64 quintales ~ 2945 kilograms
  • Peru
    • 1 cajon = 60 quintales ~ 2761 kilograms

Using the Castilian Libra with 460 grams for a Marc of eight ounces, an attempt was made to obtain the silver content by "equating" with the cajon. A cajon was understood to mean a weight of ten quintals / hundredweight to 100 libra / pound or 12,000 marcs; So an ore of twelve marcs in the cajon. The processable ores usually had no more than eight to ten Marc of silver on the cajon ore.
