Georg von Alten (Lieutenant General)

Georg Karl Friedrich Viktor von Alten (born April 23, 1846 in Potsdam , † April 28, 1912 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Georg came from the Lower Saxon noble family von Alten and was the son of Georg Julius Bogislaw von Alten (1809–1867) and his wife Bertha, née Labes (1823–1903).

Military career

Alten joined the 30th Combined Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on May 2, 1863 and took part in the Battle of Königgrätz as a second lieutenant during the war against Austria in 1866 . In 1875 he became a captain in the General Staff .

From May 14, 1894 to March 18, 1896, he was in command of the Colberg Grenadier Regiment "Graf Gneisenau" (2nd Pomeranian) No. 9 and was then promoted to major general in command of the 65th Infantry Brigade in Mörchingen . On June 27, 1897, Alten was transferred to the General Staff of the Army, and in 1899 he was promoted as Lieutenant General to Commander of the 2nd Division in Insterburg . In 1901 Alten was put up for disposal .

family

Alten married Marie Wolff (* 1854 in Bunzlau ) in Berlin on September 24, 1873 . The son Hans von Alten emerged from the marriage.

Works

During his time at the General Staff, he was already active in literature in the field of military history . From 1897 he was a member of the study commission of the War Academy in Berlin. After his retirement in 1909 he was the editor of the eight-volume manual for the army and the fleet. Encyclopedia of Martial Science and Related Fields :

After his death, the series was edited under the direction of Francis Smith, Berlin, but due to the outbreak of World War I , Volume 6 was discontinued. In addition to the series, Volume 9 was published as a special volume, which ended with a depiction of the Mexican Revolution by 1911. A map volume belonging to Volume 9 was published as Volume 9a, which was published in 1911.
