Stephen Fowler Hale
Stephen Fowler Hale (born January 31, 1816 in Crittenden County , Arkansas , † July 18, 1862 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American lawyer , politician and officer who served in the United States Army and the Confederate Army .
Career
Stephen Fowler Hale graduated from Cumberland University and came to Greene County in 1837 , where he taught at a school. He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1839, and then practiced in Eutaw , Alabama until 1843 . At that time he was elected to the Alabama State Legislature , where he served again between 1857 and 1861. He served in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). In 1853 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives for the 4th electoral district of Alabama. After the secession of Alabama from the northern states , he represented that state in the Provisional Confederate Congress . He also served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War , where he held the rank of Colonel .
Hale was fatally wounded in the Battle of Seven Pines and then died near Richmond. He was then buried in Mesopotamia Cemetery in Eutaw, Alabama. He was married to a sister of Mr. FM Kirsey, the Greene County Sheriff . The couple had two children together, a son and a daughter who was married to Sumter County's Captain EB Vaughn.
The Hale County in Alabama is named after him.
