Cakau Tabu , also Thakau Tambu , formerly Gordon Reef of Wilkes is a ring-shaped coral reef in the east of the Lau Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to the Eastern Division of the island state of Fiji .
geography
Cakau Tabu is located around 25 km east of Tuvuca and 13 km northeast of Yaroua in the east of the Northern Lau Group . The atoll- like, almost square reef lies completely below the sea surface and has a length of around 5 km. The approximately 10 km² large and up to 20 m deep lagoon is almost completely enclosed by a fringing reef, only in the west there are open passages.
fauna
The coral reef is known for its occurrence of smooth giant clams ( Tridacna derasa ), among which the species Tridacna tevoroa was newly discovered here in 1986 and which is considered to be the rarest type of giant clam .
Remarks
- ↑ In Fiji the "c" is pronounced as "th" (as in English "this" ) and the "b" as "mb", so that this spelling can often be found on maps and in literature
