Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Cala Estreta ('Narrow Bay') is a small rocky bay in the northeast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located 8 kilometers northeast of the small town of Artà .

Location and description

Rocky beach

Located in the northeastern part of the municipality of Artà, in the area of sa Duaia , Cala Estreta can be reached from Artà via the road towards Cala Torta . The bay itself is very small and is hardly suitable for swimming (better: the two neighboring bays to the east, Cala Mitjana and Cala Torta ). On the east side of the bay, a road leads to the neighboring bay of Cala Mitjana . It was created to open up this stretch of coast for tourism, but this was given up due to the scarcity of drinking water in this area. Since then, the road has been falling into disrepair and the access from the south from the junction to Cala Torta is difficult to drive.

Cala Estreta can be the starting point for hikes along the coast to the west ( Cap de Ferrutx ). A not so easy to walk coastal footpath leads starting at Cala Estreta to Penya Roja (“Red Rock”), which blocks further progress on the coast itself. The path marked with cairns is also called Camí dels Carabiners , after the coast guards (Carabiners) who tried to stop smuggling on this section of the coast in the 20th century .

On the way to Penya Roja you pass the rocky bay of Cala Dèntol , the bay and the defense tower built in 1751 at the mouth of the Torrent des Matzoc , as well as the sandy beach of Sa Font Celada . From the beach of s'Arenalet des Verger on Penya Roja , it goes uphill inland to the viewpoints sa Tudosa ( height : 444 meters) and Talaia de Moreia (height: 432 meters), on which there is also a defense tower, built in 1585.

Access

Coming from Artà take the MA-15 road towards Cala Rajada , then behind a petrol station follow the signs to Cala Torta . Choose the straight course of the road at the right-hand junction to Cala Torta . The Cala Estreta then lies to the left of Cala Mitjana to the west.
