history

The ruins of the Carabiners refuge above Cala de sa Font Celada

The name Camí dels Carabiners ( German : Way of the Carabiners) goes back to the Spanish customs station Carabiners , which was founded in 1829 and existed until the 1930s , and which was active in this area to combat smuggling . Due to the remoteness of the area, which is difficult to access, and the many small bays suitable for landing ships, the area was particularly targeted by smugglers. The way served the Carabiners for their patrol work. Despite the use of the Carabiners, the smuggling continued, which should also have been due to the fact that the smugglers secured the unhindered smuggling with bribes . Smuggling was significant in the region until the mid-1950s.

The remoteness and ruggedness of the area and a restrictive nature conservation policy meant that the coast in this area, rather unusual for the island of Mallorca, remained undeveloped, so that the Camí dels Carabiners leads through a pristine landscape.
