Beaches and bays in Mallorca

Cala Mesquida is a bay and a settlement named after it (Urbanització) in the northeast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . The bay is located in the northwestern part of the municipality of Capdepera .

Cala Mesquida bay

The beach of Cala Mesquida is 300 meters long and an average of 130 meters wide. The gently sloping sandy beach is followed by a dune landscape that is about one kilometer inland and is surrounded by a pine forest . The whole bay is in a nature reserve . But even after it was designated as a nature reserve, the ecological conditions in the bay initially deteriorated. The dunes were trampled and sand was taken as building material. However, protection has been improved through the use of wooden fences and walkways and increased controls.

During the main season , the bay is very popular, not least due to its accessibility via a well-developed road from Artà or Capdepera. The Red Cross monitors the beach during this time. The usual facilities for a touristy beach such as a beach bar, deck chair and parasol rental are also to be found. In 2003 the local government approved the following: 300 loungers, 100 parasols, 12 water pedal boats, 1 kiosk, 1 monitoring tower, 1 signal mast, 1 Cruz Roja rescue station (Red Cross), with two berths for motor boats and two for sailing boats.

Bunker east of the bay

Immediately at the eastern end of the bay is a small bunker used by the Spanish military . It was created after the Spanish Civil War during the Franco regime and was built out of fear of an Allied invasion . The Spanish military is sticking to the bunker.

Ships were shipwrecked in the bay several times . For a long time a French ship that ran aground in fog lay in the bay. Later, the also French ship Albatros suffered the same fate. Nevertheless, the bay is considered a good anchorage as long as the Tramuntana is not blowing. The originally secluded bay is also said to have been important for the smuggling of coffee and tobacco .

Es Telégraf rises east of the bay , on which the Talaia de Son Jaumell tower ruins are located. To the north of the mountain is the Cap des Freu .

In the bay, the Torrent de Cala Mesquida , which only has occasional water, flows into the Mediterranean Sea .

To the west above the bay is the Cala Mesquida settlement with 40 inhabitants (as of 2015). In the local area there are several large hotel complexes, so that the actual number of inhabitants is considerably higher in the tourist season. There are also restaurants and shops in the village, as well as a German butcher's shop . To the west of the bay, not far from the location on the steep bank of the coast, the Cova des Coloms (German pigeon cave ) is indicated on maps . Along the coast to the northwest in the direction of Cala Torta , the Camí dels Carabiners coastal hiking trail begins in Cala Mesquida .

At the southern end of the settlement there is a cable transfer station at which the 132 kV submarine cable connecting Menorca and Mallorca ends and is integrated into Mallorca's overhead line network.

Access

From a roundabout on the MA-15 road on the Capdepera bypass, an asphalt road leads to the hotel complex of Cala Mesquida. There is a bus connection to Cala Rajada .

Cala Mesquida in literature

The traditional story The Moors who came to Sa Mesquida takes place in Cala Mesquida, in which a maid from Sa Mesquida goes to a well in Cala Mesquida and is attacked by Moors and forced to fetch them cheese and bread. Later the Moors come again, torture the residents of the farm, try to dissuade them from their Christian faith by force and drag them off to the land of the Moors, including the maid. The residents of the farm stick together in a foreign country. The maid, who is better housed than the gentlemen of the farm, helps the farmer and his daughter. Ultimately, on the initiative of relatives, all of them are ransomed with money from the church fund of Our Lady of San Salvador d'Arta and are returned to Mallorca alive.
