The Calawah River is a river in Clallam County on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state . The 50 kilometer long Calawah River consists of two arms that converge at Forks . The southern arm rises on the southern slopes of the Rugged Ridge , a branch of the Olympic Mountains and flows westward over numerous rapids through the Hoh Rainforest . Its main tributary is the Sitkum River , which is fed by streams from the north side of the Rugged Ridge. The northern arm is fed by numerous spring streams and flows southwest through the Olympic National Forest until the two arms converge about eight kilometers east of Forks . About five kilometers west of Forks the Calawah flows into the Bogachiel River , which in turn flows into the Quillayute River . The name Calawah comes from the Quileute language and means "middle river", which refers to the location of the river between Sol Duc and Bogachiel.
