The Sol Duc River is a river in Clallam County in the US state of Washington . The 126 km long river flows through the northwestern Olympic Peninsula and joins the Quillayute River , which flows into the Pacific after a short run. The name Sol Duc is taken from the Quileute language and translated as "sparkling water". The spelling Solduck was also used until 1992, and Sol Duc has been the official spelling since then. The main tributaries of the Sol Duc River are the North Fork Sol Duc River , South Fork Sol Duc River, and Bear Creek , Beaver Creek, and Lake Creek .
course
The Sol Duc River rises in the Seven Lakes Basin on Mount Carrie in the northern Olympic Mountains in Olympic National Park . In the national park, the Sol Duc River flows northwest over the 10 meter high two-tier Sol Duc Falls and past the Sol Duc Hot Springs spa, built in 1912 . Shortly before the park boundary, the North Fork and the South Fork flow into it. The river now flows through the river valley known as the 1.5 km wide and 35 miles long Sol Duc Valley through the Olympic National Forest . From the national park border, US Highway 101 follows the course of the river. The Beaver Creek flows in from the north , after the town of Sappho the Sol Duc flows more southwest and further south. The Beaver Creek coming from Lake Pleasant flows in here from the north . For several miles, the Sol Duc River flows very closely to the Calawah River , a tributary of the Bogachiel River . Highway 101 leaves the river valley before the city of Forks , the river is now followed by Washington State Road 110, La Push Road . The river now meanders through its valley until it joins the Bogachiel River just before the Pacific and forms the Quillayute River , which flows into the Pacific at La Push .
In winter, the Sol Duc carries significantly more water with 104 m³ / s than in summer with 12.74 m³ / s. The highest registered amount of water was 588.85 m³ / s.
The river crosses vast forests, which - with the exception of the forests of the Olympic National Park - have already been cut down at least once. Since the Sol Duc River is not fed by glaciers, it is an excellent spawning grounds for rainbow trout , Cutthroatforellen , king salmon , sockeye salmon , humpback salmon and silver salmon and therefore a popular fishing area.
Trivia
