The Caledonia was built under the hull number 732 in the yard of Fairfield Shipbuilders in Govan and was launched on March 12, 1947. After delivery to the Anchor Line on March 23, 1948, she took up the liner service from Liverpool to Bombay in April 1948 . The ship was still a pre-war draft, the two sister ships Circassia and Cilicia had been put into service a decade earlier.
In the 1960s, the liner service to India became unprofitable, which is why the Caledonia ended her last crossing in 1965 after 17 years of service. The new owner was the Moor Line, which had the ship converted to accommodate students from the University of Amsterdam. Among other things, windows were cut into the fuselage. The Caledonia arrived in Amsterdam on December 29, 1965 and was used for this purpose for over four years. In March 1970 the ship went to Hamburg-Harburg for demolition.
