Calibanus glassianus is a species of the genus Calibanus in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Glass Calibanus".

description

Calibanus glassianus forms a subglobose corky caudex 40 to 60 cm high. The variable, rarely warty, grass-like, linear, blue to green, toothed leaves on the leaf edges are 110 to 120 cm long and 7 to 9 mm wide.

The panicle inflorescence is 150 to 170 cm high. The flowers are cream to yellow in color. The species is dioecious / two-skinned / hermaphroditic / unisexual.

The pressed, spherical, red-brown capsule fruits contain a seed and are 8 to 9 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide. The triangular red-brown seeds are 2.5 to 4.5 mm in diameter.

Systematics and distribution

Calibanus glassianus grows in Mexico in the state of Guanajuato and on the border with San Luis Potosi in tropical and submontane regions, which is dominated by Bursera morelensis. It is common at altitudes of 900 to 1000 m.

It was first described in 2003 by Luis Hernández and Sergio Zamudio .

Calibanus glassianus was discovered by Charles Glass in the late 20th century. It is common in limited areas in central Mexico. The subglobose, corky caudex is typical. The variable grass-like leaves are similar to Calibanus hookeri, but differences in length and width become clear. Nevertheless, differences in inflorescence and fruit can be seen.
