Calibanus hookeri is a species of the genus Calibanus in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Calibanus".

description

Calibanus hookeri forms a low, spherical, corky, later woody caudex 30 to 100 cm wide. The thin, variable, rough, grass-like, linear, blue-green, toothed leaves on the leaf edges are 30 to 90 cm long and 2 to 3 mm wide.

The paniculate, stiff inflorescence becomes 10 to 20 cm wide. The flowers are purple in color. The species is dioecious / two-skinned / hermaphroditic / unisexual.

The spherical to egg-shaped, straw-brown capsule fruits contain a seed and are 8 to 9 mm long and 6 to 7 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 3 to 4 mm long and 3 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Calibanus hookeri is distributed in Mexico in the states of Hidalgo, San Luis Potosi and Tamaulipas in dry mountain regions. It is associated with Coryphanta clavata and various Mammillaria species.

It was first described in 1911 by William Trelease .

Some of the numerous synonyms are Dasylirion hartwegianum Hook. (1859) and Dasylirion caespitosum Scheidw. (1861).

Calibanus hookeri is common in central and northeastern Mexico. The low, spherical, corky, later woody caudex is typical. The thin, variable leaves resemble some Nolina species with grass-like leaves. The recently newly described species Calibanus glassianus shows differences in inflorescence and fruit. Nevertheless, similarities with Beaucarnea compacta in appearance become clear.

Calibanus hookeri can survive short periods of frost down to minus 8 ° C when it is dry.
