Font example for Calibri

Calibri is a sans serif typeface from type designer Lucas de Groot . It is part of a series of fonts introduced with Microsoft Windows Vista . It has also been included in Microsoft Office since Windows version 2007 and Mac OS X version 2008. Here it replaced Verdana as the standard sans serif font. In 2012, the new font weights Light and Light Italic were published with a Windows 7 update .

Among the six Windows Vista fonts Calibri is the one that the Lucida - clan is most similar.

Calibri, which contains the character sets Latin, Latin (extended), Greek and Cyrillic, was originally designed by Lucas de Groot for a pitch to redesign the ZDF appearance. When asked for a sans serif, he submitted this draft to Microsoft. The font is subject to a proprietary license, i. H. it may not be freely used or distributed.

Availability

In addition to Microsoft Office, it is included in the PowerPoint Viewer 2007, Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 as well as in the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac , along with the other new fonts Cambria , Candara , Consolas , Constantia and Corbel , which Microsoft offers for free download. The font is retained on the computer even after uninstalling PowerPoint Viewer 2007 and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac .

"#FontGate"

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, daughter of then Pakistani President Nawaz Sharif , posted a document in Calibri font on Twitter in 2016 that was dated February 2006. According to research by the newspaper Dawn , de Groot delivered Calibri to Microsoft as early as 2004, but it was first published in a beta version in June 2006. It is considered "unlikely" that the document was created with such a beta version. The document was intended to declare her innocence in connection with real estate property, which was made known through the publication of the Panama Papers . The falsification allegation received the hashtag “#FontGate” on Twitter in 2017.

Free alternative: Carlito

Calibri is under a proprietary license. The font cannot be used without a license (which is usually acquired when buying a Microsoft Office package). For the problem of a missing license, Google offers the font "Carlito" under the open (free, freely available) license "SIL Open Font License". It has the same spacing as Calibri, so that when printing or PDF export (e.g. under Linux) a Calibri document looks practically the same as it does on the screen or under Microsoft Word. If Calibri is otherwise replaced with a completely different font in the background during printing, the layout will change significantly due to the different spacing. Under Ubuntu-Linux, the package "fonts-crosextra-carlito" is installed for "Carlito".
