Caliente was founded in 1901 on the territory of the Culverwell Ranch owned by William and Charles Culverwell. The place was originally called Calientes , but workers removed the "s" at the post office, which opened that same year. In 1905 the Union Pacific Railroad line between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas was completed, to which Caliente owes its creation. In 1923, the station was built in the style of Spanish missionary architecture, and today it houses offices and a small historical museum. The population reached a maximum of 5,000 people, but then fell steadily, especially in the late 1940s with "dieselization", the conversion from steam to diesel locomotives.
