The State Route begins on California State Route 86 near Oasis and ends 21 miles in Indio on Interstate 10 .

The California State Route 86S branches off the CA 86 northeast of the Salton Sea at Oasis. State Route runs as a multi-lane road north and meets west of Mecca to the California State Highway 111 and 195 . Before the city of Coachella , the State Route passes the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport to the west . In the east of Indio, the road ends again at I-10.
