Californium (II) iodide is an iodide of the artificial element and actinoid californium with the molecular formula CfI 2 . It is a deep purple solid and could be produced in microgram quantities under high vacuum . It is produced from californium (III) iodide (CfI 3 ) by reduction with highly pure hydrogen (H 2 ) at 570 ° C in a quartz capillary:

At slightly higher temperatures it melts and reacts with the silicon dioxide of the glass walls, whereby u. a. CfOI educates.

It has two crystalline modifications: a rhombohedral structure of the CdCl 2 type which is stable at room temperature with a  = 743.4 ± 1.1  pm and α = 35.83 ± 0.07 °, and a trigonal , metastable structure of CdI 2 -Type ( polytype 2H) with a  = 455.7 ± 0.4 pm and c  = 699.2 ± 0.6 pm. The optical spectra show absorption bands in the wavelength range from 300 to 1100 nm, which confirm the presence of Cf (II).
