Call Cobbs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Call Cobbs (born June 30, 1911 in Springfield , Ohio , † September 21, 1971 in New York City ) was an American jazz pianist (also: Rocksichord, organ ).

Live and act

Ben Webster moved Cobbs and Kenny Clarke to New York in 1937, where Cobbs formed a trio with Clarke and his step-brother, bassist Frank Spearman, who worked in Harlem . When Cobbs worked for Art Tatum as a secretary and guide for the blind, the trio broke up. He later joined Billie Holiday and replaced Hampton Hawes in Wardell Gray's band . Cobbs played in big bands and was part of Johnny Hodges ' band in 1954 , as did John Coltrane , with whom he also played in his combo.

Between 1964 and 1970 he belonged with interruptions to Albert Ayler's group , of which he was partly musical director. In 1967 he played with him at the Montreal Jazz Festival . With Ayler, he also performed in France in 1970 . The blues - and gospel-oriented style Cobbs and used by him spinet -Klangfarben on the electronic Rocksichord formed a contrast to the Free Jazz Ayler, the critic Henry Kuntz similarly attractive as the game of Fred Van Hove in a trio with Peter Brötzmann and Han Bennink found. Cobbs died after being hit by a car in the Bronx .
