List of grape varieties

Callet [ kajɛt ] is a red variety that especially on the Balearic cultivated is.

Origin, descent

It comes from Mallorca and arose from a spontaneous crossing of the Callet cas Concos and Fogeneu varieties . Callet means "black" in the Majorcan dialect.

distribution

The variety is often grown on the Balearic island of Mallorca in a mixed batch with the Fogoneu variety and blended with this and Manto Negro.

In 2010, 154 hectares were planted with this grape variety.

Wine

Traditionally made red wines are very light in color, rustic, with moderate acidity and have a low alcohol content. More recently, Callet has also been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon , Syrah or Tempranillo . The variety gives these blends a little finesse and lightness. With reduced yields and good red wine processing techniques, excellent red wines can be vinified from the grapes. The importance of this autochthonous grape variety has increased since the late 1990s.

The Callet grape variety is used for cuvées with the Fogeneu and Manto Negro grape varieties . Wines with Denominations of Origin Binissalem and Pla i Llevant are made from it.

properties

In general, the variety has good resistance to most vine diseases and brings good yields.
