The Callipurbeckiidae are a family of extinct bony fish from the order of the Semionotiformes . Family fish appeared in the norium , the middle tier of the Upper Triassic . Tlayuamichin , the last genus of the Callipurbeckiidae, comes from the Aptium , a stage of the late Lower Cretaceous. The Callipurbeckiidae family was only established in 2012 and consists of genera that were previously assigned to the Semionotidae (now only Semionotus ).

features

The Callipurbeckiidae had a compact body, an elongated head and a pointed snout. The eyes could be large or small, the dorsal fin small and pointed, or long and broad-based. The small parietal bone was less than one-third the length of the frontal bone. The suboperculare , a bone on the outer edge of the gill cover, had a noticeable outgrowth. The sideline system extended into the eye region. The supracleithrum, a cover bone of the shoulder girdle, articulates with the posterior bone (post-temporal) via a concave joint surface.

The following characteristics are not present in the basal genera Paralepidotus and Semiolepis . Advanced Callipurbeckiiden had several rows of teeth along the ridge between the gill space and the side surfaces of the Cleithrum . Scale-like fin rays on the upper edge of the slightly forked caudal fin were missing. Eight Lepidotrichia supported the fin rays of the lower, not supported by the spine, lobe of the heteroccal caudal fin. The thick, square scales, arranged in diagonal rows, had a joint at the front and back.

Genera

The Callipurbeckiidae include all genera that are more closely related to Callipurbeckia than to Macrosemius , Semionotus , Lepidotes or Lepisosteus . Five genera are currently included in the Callipurbeckiidae.
