features

butterfly

The male moths have a wingspan of 35 to 45 millimeters. With a wingspan of 43 to 60 millimeters, the females are larger than the males. On the gray to gray-brown forewings there are thin, black, sometimes jagged transverse lines, which are less pronounced in the females and sometimes completely absent. In the disk region , a light area stands out from the front edge. The hind wings are light gray-brown and unmarked. The antennae of the males are double combed, those of the females are very weakly comb-toothed. The proboscis is stunted.

Caterpillar

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are marbled brownish in the basic color and show whitish side ridge lines and orange spots. They are noticeably hairy and have numerous long, yellowish hairs on the sides. On the back there are four to seven dense, upwardly directed, mostly bluish hair brushes on the segments and another, rearwardly directed, red-brown hair brush with longer hair on the eleventh segment.

Similar species

The gorse extensor foot ( Calliteara fascelina ) has wider wings and usually a more contrasting pattern.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The species is endemic to the western Canary Islands and likes to colonize pine forests.

Way of life

Since moths, caterpillars and pupae were found at the same time of Calliteara fortunata , further investigations are necessary with regard to the generation sequence. The males fly during the day and also visit artificial light sources at night . Canary pine ( Pinus canariensis ), Gagel tree ( Myrica faya ) and Adenocarpus foliolosus have been identified as food plants for the caterpillars . Different food crops are used on the individual islands.
