description
Vegetative characteristics
Myrica faya grows as an evergreen tree or tree-shaped shrub and reaches heights of 4 to 10, in exceptional cases up to 20 meters.
The alternate arranged at the branch leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The petiole is relatively short. The leathery, dark green leaf blade is lanceolate and narrowed at its base. The aromatic leaves are dense and finely translucent dotted. The leaf margin is slightly rolled up, wavy, sometimes notched and sawed irregularly.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from March to May. Myrica faya is dioeciously segregated ( diocesan ). As a rule, branched kitten-like inflorescences are formed. The male flowers have showy, red anthers .
distribution
The Gagelbaum grows in the Canary Islands and is widespread in the tree heather bush forest (Fayal-Brezal) and in the laurel forest . This species is naturalized in Portugal . The Gagel tree is a neophyte in Hawaii and threatens the native Metrosideros forests there.
use
The wood is used to manufacture rods and support forks for agriculture. The Canarian natives ground the dried fruits in times of need and used them to produce the staple food Gofio , for which otherwise mainly grain was used.
