Callulina kreffti is a species of amphibian from the genus Callulina .
description
The body is very stocky and reaches a head-trunk length of 41 millimeters. The front head is short and triangular with a blunt tip. It is as long as the diameter of the eye. The nostril is much closer to the tip of the snout than to the eye. The interorbital space is about one and a half times as wide as an upper eyelid. The first finger is much shorter than the second. The fourth and fifth toes are connected by skin in the area of their first phalanx. The subarticular humps are very clear. There are two broad, flat metatarsal cusps. When the hind leg is drawn forward to the body, the tibiotarsal joint extends between the shoulder and the eye. The skin is very rich in glands and very granular everywhere, mostly stronger on the back than on the stomach. The top is blackish or brown in various tones. In the shoulder area and on the middle of the back there are often individual small black spots. The underside is whitish or yellowish and indistinctly dark marbled.
Occurrence
The species occurs in Kenya in the Taita Hills and along the coast as well as in Tanzania in the eastern Usambara Mountains .
Systematics
The species Callulina kreffti was first described by Fritz Nieden in 1911 .
Threat and Safeguards
The habitat of this species is becoming more and more restricted by mining, agriculture and forestry. Protected populations can be found in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park , Shimba Hills National Reserve, and the Amani Nature Reserve .
