features

Macroscopic features

Caloplaca erythrocarpa is a crusty lichen, which means that its bed ( thallus ) rests closely on the base. Thallus is white, cracked, areolated and clearly delimited. The edge lobes are easy to see. The apothecia are 0.2 to 1 millimeter in diameter, numerous and compact. The apothecia disc is red and the apothecia rim is lighter than the disc, mostly still with remnants of thallus.

Microscopic features

The spores are hyaline , polar 2-celled, 16–18 µm × 4–6 µm.

Spot reaction

The thallus does not change color when it is drizzled with potassium hydroxide (K-) and the apothecary disc changes color to carmine red (K +).
