Scientific name
Camaenidae

The Camaenidae are one of the most species-rich families from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora). Camaenidae are widespread in large parts of Asia , as well as in Papua New Guinea , the Solomon Islands and Australia . They colonize a wide variety of habitats , from tropical rainforests to deserts. The center of diversity is in Southeast Asia.

features

The cases are moderately large to large. Shape, ornamentation and color vary widely. Often there is also a high intra-species variability. The umbilical is open or closed. The mouth is also multifaceted, and there is often a folded mouth rim. However, there are seldom teeth that protrude into the mouth. Characteristic is the lack of diverticulum and love arrow sack in the genital apparatus.

Systematics

The subdivision of the Camaenidae into subfamilies (Camaeninae, Rhagadinae, Sinomeloinae) is currently controversial and not generally recognized and needs to be checked by comparative phylogenetic studies. A species-rich group of American species were also assigned to the Camaenidae until recently. However, the latest phylogenetic studies have shown that these snails belong to another family, the Pleurodontidae .

Genera

Currently, 87 genera are recognized within the family.
