Cambourne is a planned village in Cambridgeshire , UK since 1998 . The village is one of several new settlements in south east England that are being created to keep up with population growth.

Cambourne is 14 kilometers east of Cambridge , is on a formerly agricultural area and is divided into the three districts of Great Cambourne, Lower Cambourne and Upper Cambourne. After 2010 the town will have around 10,000 inhabitants.

history

Plans for a new town in the vicinity of the Cambridge technology location had existed since the 1980s. The draft and design plan for Cambourne was done by Terry Farrell and partners and is based on principles of a British garden city . The name Cambourne is a made-up word from Cambridge, the next town, and Bourn, the next town.

The building permit for the settlement was granted in November 1996 and construction began in June 1998. The construction of up to 3300 houses, 30 percent of which were social housing, took place by 2012 and in December 2010 an option for a further 950 residential units was approved.

All residential units were built by the three developers Bovis Homes, Bryant Homes and George Wimpey. In return, the developers financed infrastructure measures worth £ 32 million.

A pub ( The Monkfield Arms ), a joint medical practice, a Morrisons supermarket, a hotel, two primary schools ( Monkfield Park Primary School and The Vine Inter-Church Primary School ) and allotments were built by the developers somewhat delayed after the residential development . A police station is available; the construction of a fire station began in November 2010 and was completed in June 2011. The fire station is looked after personally and materially by the Cambridge fire station.

Demographics

The residents of Cambourne are significantly younger than those of the surrounding towns. 30% of Cambourne residents are children (16 and under) compared to 22% in the South Cambridgeshire area . 42% of residents are 30 to 44 years old compared with 23 percent in South Cambridgeshire.

In 2008/2009 the settlement had a rate of 24.1 births per 1,000 women (compared to the UK average of 12.1 per 1,000 women).

reception

Cambourne is just one of many planned settlements. Accordingly, an attempt was made to learn from the Cambourne example.

Cambourne's design included goals from the areas of ecology, transport and energy efficiency as well as village character and community. A survey by Stephen Platt among institutions involved in the project (stakeholders) tried to find out to what extent these goals were achieved. The ecological goal of expanding the protection of the habitat of animals and plants has been achieved, while the transport policy goal, a good public transport connection and an infrastructure of short distances with attractive footpaths and bike paths has only partially been achieved. Cambourne residents are, on average, more dependent on cars than residents of other localities. The goal of a resource-saving construction method (energy efficiency, rainwater use, recycling) was mostly not met. The village-like character of the districts due to the green and open spaces as well as the integration into arable land is largely regarded as successful by those involved in the project, while the formation of a village community has not (yet) been successful.

A survey of residents in 2006 showed that a lack of infrastructure and juvenile delinquency were the biggest problems, while the peace and quiet and the surrounding nature were rated very positively.
